Columbus the Pragmatist
Columbus was a pragmatist.
Five centuries after the invention of the compass,
few of the sailors plying Europe’s northern coasts carried one aboard.
They were a superstitious lot, deeply mistrustful of innovation.
Most were content to simply hug the coast.
When a pilot boldly proposed to sail his ships due west –
where the Atlantic grew:
too vast to offer landmarks,
too deep to navigate by soundings, and
too stormy to steer by the stars –
some thought him a fool.
But this pilot was no fool.
Below decks, he kept a compass.
He made profitable use of the best tools available.
Much of the business world is still uncharted as:
new technology,
new competition,
new products,
new markets continue to change the landscape.
This constantly changing landscape causes us to ask such questions as?
“How do we get people to work together – in teams, across functions, across cultures?”
“Why does it take so long to get things accomplished?”
“Why can’t my team become more innovative?”
“What would it take to have a great culture that supports our strategic direction?”
“What would it take to really unleash the talent of our leaders?”
The answers to forging new directions often feel as elusive as ever.
Yet, now, more than ever, organizations need new ways to chart and find their future. Like Columbus, you can begin by getting the best tools available.
